Jenna has also been struggling to live a "normal life" ever since a misunderstanding which led people into thinking she had a "failed suicide attempt," and because of this she has been counseling with Valerie Marks, who gives Jenna terrible advice and considers Jenna her "best friend."
After she dated Collin, her personality, wardrobe and attitude began to change, making her reckless, uncaring and more daring, and as a result she was alienated by her friends, but it's later revealed that Collin still had a sexual relationship with his ex-girlfriend. Collin told Jenna that their relationship wasn't exclusive, this made it clear that they are no longer together, but she managed to make everything right between her friends and family.
Jenna is described as smart, compassionate, empathetic, caring and friendly. But she can be vulnerable, a little selfish with what she wants and placed in very awkward situations, however as of now she has started to grow up and take control with her life, making her even more mature since the series started.

Hamilton is the daughter of Lacey and Kevin Hamilton, who had Jenna when they were seventeen, and it's mentioned that when Lacey's pregnancy got revealed to Kevin's parents, they had an angry confrontation with her, and too make matters worse, this resulted in her throwing up, but it's unknown if they've made up since then. Jenna was born on December 2, 1995 in Los Angeles at 7:32 P.M. Because her parents had her at a young age, they are childish and embarrassing towards Jenna, as they both try to be her friend rather than a parent.
Sometime during her childhood, Jenna befriended Kristy Patton, whom she mentioned used to eat paste, but this friendship is assumed to be short-lived since they're no longer close in high school. She also befriended Tamara Kaplan and Ming Huang, who are her best friends. It was shown, that she has a playhouse in her garden and used to collect Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles action figures. Prior to the beginning of the series, it is suggested that Jenna and Sadie Saxton have never been on good or friendly terms and have been long-term enemies for a long time. It has also been mentioned that during Aunt Ally's visits, Jenna used to always has to spend time in care during her childhood.
Before Pilot, it shows in a flashback that she lost her virginity to Matty McKibben at summer camp in a supply closet, although after they had sex, he told her that they should keep their relationship a secret, which slightly angers Jenna.

When she arrives back home and the day before school starts, Jenna receives a 'care-frontation letter', however she ignores it and takes goes into her bathroom where she takes some pills, but chokes on it which results in the medication-bottle falling it's contents onto the ground and Jenna slips on the floor, hurting herself and accidentally knocking her hair dryer into the bathtub full of water, which results in a power outage and ends with a misunderstanding in which everyone thinks was an attempted suicide, and she takes counselling with Valerie Marks, the guidance counsellor, who keeps Jenna on suicide watch, and she also starts to realize this mistake might actually be her ticket to social visibility, as she volunteers for Jake Rosati's prep rally as an attempt to get closer to Matty. There task involved in both pairs swapping each others clothes and the fastest wins, which Jenna and her partner wins because mean girl Sadie Saxton couldn't fit into Matty's clothes.
When Jenna finds out about this she tries to apologize to Sadie, who is convinced that Jenna picked the sex exchange game on purpose. After the failed apolgy attempt, Jenna bumps into Matty, who smiles at her but walks away because the cheerleaders were watching and Jake, who overheard the conversation between the the two and tells her that she was brave to do the prep rally. However, after returning home Jenna discovers she has 21 new friend requests on her online profile page and also changes her blog to invisible girl daily.
The episode begins with Jenna visiting the doctors with her mother Lacey and best friend Tamara Kaplan. The doctor gives her a childish-green sling which glows in the dark. Later while having trouble changing her clothes, mean girls Sadie and Lissa Miller decide to get "revenge" on Jenna for her sex exchange task and snap a nude photo of Jenna's breasts in the girls' locker room and send it to the entire school, eliciting some surprising reactions. Matty says something mean about the photo and Jenna gets upset. The school's counselor, Valerie Marks talks with Sadie and Jenna about the picture, but Sadie manages to manipulate her way out of trouble, much to Jenna's protests. Eventually Matty takes all the pictures down at their school and explain that he wasn't insulting her, and was only trying to deflect the attention from her breasts. Jenna realizes that Matty was trying to be her hero after seeing her post and it ends with them kissing.
The episode starts with Jenna having sex with Matty in her childhood playhouse and gives she gives him her teenage mutant ninja action figure, which she finds out he used to collect. He says goodbye to her and invites her to Lissa's party, making Jenna thinks Matty is taking their relationship public at an 'in crowd'. She takes Tamara as her plus one and is immediately insulted by an angry Sadie, but she's heartbroken when she saw him making out with another girl in the hot tub. Matty later asks the girl to stay away when she offers to take it upstairs, however Jenna didn't see it. Jenna starts to get to know Jake, after accepting a ride home with him.
Jenna hears that everyone in the hot tub at Lissa's party gets pink eye including her best friend Tamara. She is also relived to find out that Matty never contracted the infection, making her happy that he never slept with the other girl. When the homecoming bonfire comes Jenna wants to DTR (Define the relationship) with Matty before the bonfire where everyone hooks up. The two hook up behind the dumpster and Matty told Jenna that he thinks she's a good kisser, beautiful, and funny after Jenna asks Matty if they can DTR, although he tells her he likes her, he doesn't think he's ready to be in a relationship, this deeply upsets Jenna, but she offers him a ride home with her parents (who were stoned at the time), which he accepts
Jenna feels upset when she sees a girl Oliva, aka 'Jenna plus', coming out of Matty's truck, leading her to think that when Matty said he wasn't ready, he meant with a dork like Jenna. She lands in detention with Olivia after confronting her stalker, Kyle that sells 'Jenna lives' t-shirts, promoting her failed suicide attempt. Jenna later realizes that Olivia is a really nice girl and Matty reveals that she is actually his ex-Girlfriend-in-law and has been in an on-off relationship with his older brother, James McKibben. Also in this episode, Jake kisses Jenna, after he is convinced after talking to her that he is the mystery person she has a crush on. She also apologizes to Kyle for the attack and he explains to her that "Jenna Lives" is his band and she pays him for one of his t-shirts, but it is discovered that he is actually stalking Jenna after it is shown that he has pictures of her in his locker.
The episode begins with Jenna forced by her mother into coming to a knick-knacker intake gathering, where she runs into Matty who is the waiter and discovers that Darlene Saxton is Sadie's mother. Jake tells Matty that he kissed Jenna and might be into her. Tamara and Jenna become convinced that Sadie wrote the care-frontation letter and go up to Sadie's bedroom, where they find Sadie's dietary diary, which they take and Tamara tries to convince Jenna to blackmail Sadie with her secrets. In the end, Jenna insults Sadie with the help of a diary entry, but Sadie gets her back, by convincing her that the next knick-knacker event is a formal one, when it a casual-wear one, embarrassing both Jenna and her mother when they appear at a soup-kitchen dressed nicely. Matty tries to convince him that he should let go. Jake realizes how much he is into Jenna after talking to Matty and decides to talk to her about it. When Jake texts Jenna so that they can talk, Matty pulls out his phone to ask Jenna if they can meet tonight. Jenna decides not to let Matty, as he has all the power in their relationship. Matty is upset and disappointed when she has replied to Jake's message but not his. Jenna also asks Sadie about the letter, which she has no clue about, assuring Jenna that Sadie is not the writer.
Val casts Jenna in a mock DUI event held at school, without her permission. Jenna manages to manipulate her into thinking that it won't be right because of her "suicide attempt", however Val comes to Jenna's home and talks with her parents about the event, and Jenna's mother, whom was previously cast as Dead Stacey in 1995, gets excited a pressures Jenna into playing the role, which she reluctantly agrees. She is casted, alongside Jake. Jenna is trying to play hard-to-get with matty, which seems to be working. But unknown to her Lissa starts to take notice of her relationship with Jake. Jenna eventually asks Val if she could make a few changes in the play and get Tamara and Ricky Schwartz to join the event and play as Dead Stacey and her boyfriend's (Jake) drunk friends. Val loves the idea and agrees with the changes. Jenna later meets up with Matty and is disappointed when Matty didn't introduce her to his drunk brother when he saw them kissing and asked her to leave. During the play, Tamara makes the play more interesting and "dramatically" kisses Jenna too bring her back too life. This gives them a good response from the other students and when Matty apologizes, Jenna gets angry and tells him that she's tired of being his secret. Jake confesses to Jenna that he has feelings for her and Jenna finally gets the public attention after the successful show.
The episode starts with Lacey pampering Jenna and Tamara, revealing that her best friend Ally, who refers Jenna as 'lil bitch', is coming to visit, making Jenna angry because every time Ally visits, Jenna has spent every weekend in care. Jenna decides throws a party to try to impress Matty with her mom and Ally's help. The next day, Jenna struggles to remember the events of the night, which ended with Jenna giving Jake a lecture, hurting Matty's feelings, and kissing Tamara's crush, Ricky. When she arrives at Tamara's house to apologize, Tamara throws out a picture of them and tells her that she's glad she wrote the care-frontation letter.
Tamara is still ignoring Jenna and she is having the worst birthday ever, after she failed her drivers' test because she distracted by her instructors hook-hand, and also Sadie dissed her and threw her drink in Jenna's face. Matty later gives Jenna a ride home after the football game, which made Sadie furious. In the ride, Matty tells Jenna why he was hurt by her comments and the two become friends again. When Jenna goes into her home, she discovers that her mother remodelled her bedroom, to give it a more "adult look" with a mirror on the ceiling above her bed. By the end of the day, just before Jenna truly turns 16, Matty knocks on her door and tells her that he wants to be more than friends.
The episode starts with, Lissa slapping Jenna after Jake tells her about the kiss between him and Jenna. Jenna slowly starts to reconnect with Tamara and Jake has to earn Lissa's trust by doing whatever she wants. Matty finally asks Jenna out to dinner. Tamara confesses that she only said she wrote the letter because she was hurt, and she thinks Matty is the one that wrote the letter. This causes Jenna worry when Matty takes her to a restaurant in a secluded area, which turns out to be Matty's family's restaurant. Jenna's concerns are resolved when Matty's uncle told her about how Matty has never taken a girl there before. When they get back to Jenna's home, Tamara and Ming bust their date with games and confessions but are soon won over by Matty's true words. Before leaving Matty and Jenna alone, Tamara whispers that she doesn't think that Matty wrote the letter anymore. In the meantime, Lissa and Sadie team up to make Jake break up his friendship with Jenna but he ends up apologizing to Jenna for the earlier fight, and breaks up with Lissa.
In the last episode, Matty asks her what color dress she will be wearing to the formers. Later, still not asking her to the dance, he asks her if she is a limo girl or not. Jenna gets jealous when she sees other boys going great lengths make a 'big ask'. Jake asks Jenna to the dance by giving her a CD, which has "Will you go to the dance with me?" printed on it. She tells him that she already has a date. Jake tells Matty about being turned down by Jenna. He asks Jenna if it's okay for them to skip Formal since he doesn't want to hurt Jake, but he doesn't tell Jenna that. Meanwhile, Sadie manages to steal Jenna's file, with the letter in it. Jenna is surprised to be nominated for Sophomore Princess, but then discovers that the ballot has her letter printed on the back of it. Jenna decides that she deserves more, and goes to Formal with Jake.
Jenna agrees to go to the Formal with Jake, with Ming and Tamara tagging along. Matty decides that he won't give up on Jenna and goes to her house, only to find that Jenna has already left for the Formal. Jake and Jenna have a good time at the Formal, and Jenna decides that maybe Jake is the one for her and they kiss, but then Matty shows up. Jenna takes Jake's hand and realizes that that's what she wants, and tells Matty that she's very sorry, but she thinks it is too late. When Jake and Jenna get home, and they kiss again. She tells him that he's the first person other than her parents to hold her hand in public. They set off the alarm by accident, and Jenna finds the note pad that has the same paper the carefrontation letter was written on while looking for the alarm code, and realizes that it's her mother who sent the letter.
Matty tells Jenna that he wants a second chance in the new year party. Jenna chooses Jake and shares a kiss with him. Later at night, Jake sees the condoms her dad gave her in which she reveals to him that she is not a virgin, leading to Jake becoming jealous.
The school year is back and the Sanctuary has a video camera put in tapping all the action that has happened. Jenna and Matty debate if they should tell Jake about their secret relationship. Matty confesses to Jenna that he loves her after hearing from Jake that Jenna was in love with the guy that she slept with before. But Jenna says she really likes Jake since he is not embarrassed to be seen with her and never makes her feel bad about herself. Matty is really upset and apologizes to Jenna. Meanwhile, Jenna pressures her mom into telling her dad about writing the letter.
Jenna and Jake's relationship is going steady but Matty keeps tagging along and trying to tempt and seduce Jenna with his 'unintentional touching' and nuding up every chance he gets. Jenna's parents are separated. Jenna and Matty get into an argument where Matty denies luring her and saying that Jenna is too clingy. Later Jenna apologizes for accusing Matty of seducing her and they make up. However it is revealed that Matty really was trying to sabotage Jenna and Jake's relationship from Sadie and Matty's conversation.
Post her parents separation, Jenna feels responsible. In an impulsive effort to absolve herself, she seeks refuge from her problems in a higher power with Lissa at Church Camp. Little does she know that Sadie has decided to tag along as well, who mentions Jenna's "failed-suicide attempt", which causes a problem between her and her new friends.
Valentine's Day has arrived and dividing the school between swooning lovers and jealous haters. As Jenna prepares to spend her first V-day with a boyfriend, will jealousy rear its ugly head for her, as Matty begins to date Courtney.
Jenna upsets Jake by saying 'awesome' back when he said 'I love you'. This leads to Jenna doubting if she loves Jake like how she loved Matty. She considers sleeping with him after taking Tamara's advice, hoping to clarify her feelings for Jake. However she accidentally hits the PA system which ends up telling the whole school.
Jake gets upset and breaks up with Jenna saying that their timing isn't right. He refuses to talk to both Matty and Jenna. Matty and Courtney are making out but Matty stops Courtney, telling her that he can't focus and needs to take care of his friend. Jake listens to the voice mail of Jenna and regrets breaking up with her. Matty then shows up at Jenna's house to comfort her, where they confess their love for each other. They end up kissing while Jake watches behind the backdoor in horror.
Jenna tries to fix things with Jake but he is convinced that she is a cheater, with a photo of Jenna and Matty making out last night. Jake and Matty get into a fist fight over Jenna during a pep rally.
Jake and Matty demand answers from Jenna after reading her blog. Jenna gets confused on who she likes more but does not pick on the spot. Jake and Matty become friends again and constantly ask Jenna who she picks. Meanwhile, Jenna's mom gets revealed as the person who wrote the letter and gets criticized by many people. Jenna and the boys are in good speaking terms again.
Jenna begins her junior year after spending her summer with Matty. Jenna also finds out that Valerie replaced her with Tamara as her new "best friend", and Jake and Tamara's romance making her uncomfortable. Jenna also finds out that Valerie set her up for Mr. Hart's creative writing class (meeting Collin Jennings) and also discovering that she might be pregnant. She tell her mother and takes a pregnancy test, but the test reveals that her pregnancy was negative, making her happy and relieved, but she decides not to tell Matty fearing he might break-up over it. During the final moments of the episode, a mass text broke out revealing that Ricky Schwartz is dead, shocking both Jenna and Tamara.
During Ricky's memorial service, Jenna begins to reflect on her life and starts to make better choices for herself and also finds out herself that everyone is mourning Ricky's death in different ways, especially Matty who is going through a "YOLO-faze", trying to profess his love more to Jenna and even trying to have as much sex as he can with her, which she puts off after the pregnancy scare. Her best friend Tamara also begins to worry that she might have killed Ricky, by using voodoo but Jenna reasures her that it's not her fault. Kyle plans a party for Ricky's passing which results in almost every girl, including Clark, Tamara and Sadie talking about how much they hate Ricky. Matty shows Jenna a tattoo saying 'Jenna 4eva' to prove his love for Jenna, which upsets her because she can't be fully honest with him. Afterwards, Jenna tells Jake about the pregnancy scare, who then tells Matty. He becomes upset that she didn't tell him first and he leaves the party.
Jenna feels and begins to take notice that Matty has become distant after he found out about the pregnancy scare through Jake. Matty has been avoiding sex or physical contact with Jenna and tells her that they need to talk, which prompts her to get Tamara to arrange a group date 'BFGFBBF', alongside Jake, Ming, Matty and Henry (Ming's fake boyfriend). Whenever Matty got close to Jenna she'd make Tamara be her wing-woman and help distract Matty from talking to her. During a game of sharades, Matty and Tamara become jealous of Jenna and Jake's easygoing friendship. Matty asks her about why it is easy to talk to Jake but not him. Jenna brought up how she thinks he is embarrassed of her, but he said he was never embarrassed of her. They make up and kiss.
The next episode begins where Jenna's dad finds Jenna's birth control pills in the spare bedroom and assumes their Lacey's, however he catches on to Lacey's lie and finds out their Jenna's. To add to Jenna's humiliation and embarrassment even more, Kevin finds out Jenna and Matty are sexually active and calls to inform his parents. However Jenna awkwardly tells Matty about this and he says that he can delete the message. However later that evening, the McKibben's come over for dinner and have an embarrassing conversation about their children's sex-life, which eventually results in the mothers have an arguments over their different parenting styles. At the end of the episode, Matty moves in after dispute with his parents.
Matty is enjoying taking advantage of the Hamilton's good nature, while Jenna feels invaded and wants Matty to leave, unable to get peace and have a moment to herself, she falls asleep during Mr. Hart's class, which results in him drawing a moustache on her face. She tries to enjoy a few moments alone in the bathroom (while Matty's at football practice) but he reveals that it was cancelled and she becomes really annoyed of this, however she accidentally farts during her rage. Later on, she apologizes to Matty for acting like a freak and he tells her that he forgives her and that her parents are away. They decide to have a night together watching porn together and she accidentally hurt Matty's feelings. At night she finds out that Matty is crying in the bathroom and Lacey has a talk with Matty, encouraging him to talk things out with his mom. Matty and Jenna make up and he goes back home the next day.
During Halloween, a bunch of mean girls put Jenna at #1 on the not hot list, while Matty is #1 on the hot list. Jenna eventually begins to feel insecure at the possibilty that Matty could leave her for someone far more attractive, after realizing that she can be a bit boring at times. Collin invites Jenna to his girlfriends house and even convinces Jake, Tamara, Matty and even Sadie to attend the party. During a party game, Jenna reveals her misunderstood suicde attempt to fit in and to her surprise the other kids thought she was cool, making her realize that she and Matty can be as equally cool. But Matty reveals that he doesn't love Jenna because of her labels, he loves her for her.
During homecoming pinnings, Jenna feels bad for single girls who don't have dates, especially former childhood friend Kristy Patton. Jake and Matty later get Tamara to tell them a secret she has been keeping, that Jenna doesn't want to go to the dance because Matty doesn't like dancing, but Jenna becomes occupied trying to get Kristy a date, but it's revealed that she's a drug dealer and has no interest in romance. Jake later teaches Matty how to dance. Matty and Jenna then dance together in the parking lot.
Mr. Hart convinces Jenna to take risks and challenges her to come to an open-mic night to read a personal piece and he will give her an A. She decides to take the story of how she lost her virginity, but unfortunately for her Sadie, Collin, her parents and Valerie all come as well. She reads the story anyway and gets applauded at the end, making her happy. Collin offers to buy her coffee and she hints that she might have a crush on him after he touched her hand.
Jenna begins to realize that she may have feelings for Collin after he comes up in her head during sex with Matty, even though her Tamara tells her it's normal to have fantasies. But she begins to feel guilty that she has feelings for someone else and not Matty and convinces herself that she's having an "affair". She does a rewrite on her virginity story to be like a romance-novel, but Sadie knows it was what she would like her first time with Collin to be like. Finally, Jenna begins to realize that it's all in her head after seeing Collin and Angelique kissing and begins to take notice that it's normal to have fantasies and not feel guilty.
Jenna sees that Colin stills flirts with her. She confronts him about it and he laughs. He invites her to a photography party for the photographer that she likes. Before entering the party her and Matty get into a fight, and he confesses to her that he in fact was embarrassed of her. In which upsets her and she tells him that he doesn't have to go to the party. So she goes alone. She meets Colin there, and he tells her the sexual tension is there. He drives her there, and she apologizes to him about his breakup with his girlfriend. They talk about her and she and Colin kiss. Matty walks out there but she already got out of the car.
Jenna and Collin continue their affair, although despite the fact she knows it's wrong she cannot help herself as she is drawn to him. Tamara and Ming find out, and Tamara struggles to keep it a secret. Meanwhile Jenna's mother plans a surprise party for her 17th birthday and Jenna purposely makes her expose this. Later Jenna's mother offered the house to her for the weekend while her and her father went out of town. By the end of this episode, Collin and Jenna make out and appear in the house (still making out), when everyone yells SURPRISE!! and everyone appears shocked.
Jenna is confused about who she likes and is also embarrassed and upset. She skips school because of the humiliation and she stays home all day. Everybody (Jake, Tamara, Ming, Lissa, Fred, Clark, and Sadie) wonder if Matty and Jenna are still together by trying to tell each other about the little stories that happened at Jenna's surprise party. At the end of the episode, we found out if Matty and Jenna were still together. It appears that Jenna is the one who breaks up Matty and Matty starts to cry. That's when the episode ends.
Jenna seems fine after three weeks. She has changed her her hair, she accessorizes, and her wardrobe, as well as her personality. She decides to have a public relationship with Collin and Matty visits Jenna wanting to get back together with her but she says that she's with Collin now, making him sad. But she also begins to realize that her friends don't like Collin because they don't know him. Jenna plans a BBQ so that her friends can get to know him. This doesn't start off well after Jake finds out that Tamara already knew about the affair and leaves her, making her upset and causing a delay in her and Ming getting to Jenna's party causing an argument over the phone, revealing Jenna's true colors and causing her to have no best friends.
Jenna and Collin nearly get arrested for smoking pot in his car. Jenna further alienates herself from her friends, as well as her parents. Jenna's friends and family try to warn her that Collin is a bad influence, but she ignores them and after being grounded her mother gives her back her phone and Jenna calls Collin to pick her up and they go to Collins home where he guilts her into having sex with him. Later Jenna comes home crying and Lacey is waiting on her bed, telling her that she has lost all trust in Jenna. Later at school, Jenna sees her friends and thinks about apologizing to them, but she decides not to and goes to smoke pot with Collin in his car.
During Mr. Hart's class, he orders an assignment of Heroes and Villians and the winner gets their essay on the school magazine. Valerie recruits his class for an after school special and Jenna makes up a lie for her and Collin to get out of it saying Lacey had an injury. Meanwhile Sadie decides to make the special about Jenna and calls it "What Are We Going To Do About Jenny?" However lacey makes Jenna do the project after finding out that she tricked Valerie. The special makes Jenna angry and to further her anger even more her friends try to talk some sense into her. She leaves the classroom and goes to smoke but Valerie catches her and suspends her for smoking on school campus. Valeries attempts to reach out at Jenna after realizing about what the special was about, but Jenna mocks her. Jenna decides to get her revenge by writing about the truth behind Valerie.
Jenna gives her mean essay to Mr. Hart but refuses to publish it and tells her to think about it. She rejects Val's attempt of apology and her parents struggle with their tough love of Jenna and she disobeys their rules and goes to a party with Collin and Angelique, however Collin and Angelique become high on ecstasy and after Angelique spikes Jenna's drink, she finally gets to see Collin for who he is and calls Matty to pick her up and she comments that he always saves her.
Jenna attempts reconciling with her parents and friends, but the gang is reluctant to welcome her back. Jenna learns that she caused a fight between Matty and his new girlfriend and feels bad about it. Jenna continues to see Collin's true colors and he reveals that he did sleep with Angelique, but to further her rage he also says that they weren't even dating and were non-exclusive. Jenna fidns out that Val gets indefinitely suspended from her job because of her article.
Jenna befriends the new girl, Bailey Parker. Tamara and Ming agree to be friends with Jenna again on probationary terms. Jenna hopes to get back together with Matty after learning of his break up with Devon but sees him with another girl. After Jenna gets drunk and kisses Jake, Tamara and Jake make up as they lecture Jenna. Jenna tries to apologize to Val, who tells her that she's been fired.
Jenna still feels guilty about losing Val's job, so she seeks to make amends. She enlists her mother's help to get Val to attend the school hearing and raise support for Val. She also gets Bailey and Matty's help, but this wasn't going to be enough and she gets help from an unlikely source - Sadie. In the end, Val gets her job back and her and Sadie make up.
Jenna is upset when she finds out that Matty wants to ask Bailey to prom.
